Success—You Achieved It. So Now What? How a Moonshot Can Keep a CEO Motivated, Sharp, and Building a Legacy

Background

Success is measured differently across stages of life, often built through discipline, intelligence, and the daily pursuit of meaningful goals. Over time, these efforts accumulate into strong networks of people, clients, and partners. Yet many high‑achieving leaders eventually confront an unexpected question: What now? Maintaining the status quo can feel stagnant, while doing nothing risks slipping into lethargy and a sense of emptiness. This study explores how pursuing a new moonshot goal can reignite purpose and create renewed personal and professional fulfillment.

Method

We began by examining our internal drivers—our ability to connect, influence, innovate, and lead across a broad ecosystem. Next, we assessed our external environment to identify major societal challenges that remained unaddressed. We narrowed these to two or three critical community issues and conducted extensive research into approaches used by private, public, and academic institutions. This led us to the proven methodology of Collective Impact, which is designed to tackle complex social and environmental problems. We then positioned ourselves as the “backbone” organization, creating the structure, coordination, and support needed for leaders to collaborate effectively and sustain long‑term progress.

Results

By embedding ourselves in a demanding Collective Impact backbone role, we created a forum where leaders and stakeholders could achieve early wins while building momentum for long‑term transformation. This work generated renewed inspiration, improved quality of life, and a deeper understanding of how the mind and body thrive when engaged in meaningful, high‑challenge endeavors.

Conclusion

When successful individuals acknowledge that stagnation is not an option and choose to engage deeply with their community to solve significant societal problems, they unlock new levels of purpose, vitality, and personal growth. Pursuing a moonshot not only benefits society—it enables leaders to experience their best and most fulfilled selves.
